The Story of the Prometheus Tree, a tale of hubris, competitiion and changing times

Deb Schweizer will speak at the Mono Basin Historical Society meeting on Monday November 5. Meet at the lee Vining Community Center at 6 for potluck dinner and short meeting; program begins at 7. Hear the story of cutting down of the Prometheus bristlecone Pine, the oldest known tree on the planet at that time, and the fall-0ut of that event. How and why the tree was cut, and why the action became so vilified; also a look at our obsession with the superlative, the naming of trees, and scientific competition in the quest for the “oldest.” Deb Schweizer is the Public Affairs Officer for the Inyo National Forest.
