Author David Carle will present "Putting Eastern California on the Map: Von Schmidt's Lines, 1855-1857, 1872-1874" on Monday April 2, at the Mono Basin Historical Society meeting at the Lee Vining Community Center. At 6 PM the potluck dinner and business meeting begin, followed at 7 PM by Carle's program. David Carle is the author of 15 cultural history and natural history books. He has just completed a biography of A.W. von Schmidt, a '49er who became a surveyor and civil engineer during California's first 40 years as a state. Von Schmidt led survey parties into the Eastern Sierra before any mining camps or homesteads were established and was the first to completely survey the California/Nevada boundary line, during a long life that, literally, put California on the map. Carle is the President of the Mono Basin Historical Society. All are welcome to the local organization's free monthly programs.
